Sweet Mau

Mau is a pretty cute cat, though I might be biased. It’s now been about 10 days since his dental surgery and being toothless hasn’t negatively affected his quality of life.

“This bed is so cozy!”

Aaron and I have noticed that he has become more playful and bats both crinkle balls and plastic springs around the house. Mau’s favorite toy might be the laser pointer, however, as he chases after the red dot with more gusto and stamina than either Garrus or Charlie. It’s highly amusing and delightful to watch all three cats skitter about the house trying to pounce on the elusive red dot. If I can, I’ll record a video of a play session and share it here on Purry Home Companion!

“Mama, I found a box! It’s such a nice box.”

Look at these handsome boys! I couldn’t resist snapping a photo when I saw them lined up like this.

Garrus and Mau demonstrate their nightly ottoman sprawl. Mau recently adopted this habit of flaunting his fluffy belly like this. It’s not a trap. I repeat: it’s not a trap!

Trick or…Treat?!

All three of my cats know what the treat bag is and what it sounds like when we open it. Lately Aaron and I have been using treats to shamelessly bribe and reward the Downton Tabbies for behaving while being handled and to entice them into our laps. Last night we were able to coax a very curious Charlie onto Aaron’s lap!

Also, Charlie in particular is obsessed with crinkly toys. So now, any time a plastic bag is opened, the cats perk up, thinking it’s treat time. It’s not like we dole them out like candy, honest!

Me: *opening a non-treat bag, minding my own business*

Charlie: Squeak! Squeak! *trots over to my office* Squeak!

Me: Can I help you?

Charlie: *gets onto the window seat, raises one paw in plea, and opens his mouth to let out a pitiful squeak* Whatever it is you are holding, I want it!

Me: This is not for kitties.

Boudicca: *wakes up* I beg to differ. Everything is for kitties! I’m the queen of the house and what I say goes!

Charlie: Squeak! I concur!

Garrus: Did someone say treats?! *comes to investigate, wagging his tail* I like treats.

Me: Kitties, what I have in my hands aren’t treats!

Cats: Treats? Can we have some? Please? We’re cute. *all three have question mark tails and big hopeful eyes*

Me: Sigh.

One of Those Days…

The cats were decidedly not happy that Aaron moved furniture around and brought out the dreaded vacuum monster as he cleaned the house. I’m fairly sure the cats plotted their revenge…

Garrus: Beg your pardon but why are all the kitchen table chairs in the middle of the living room? This is unacceptable! *scurries off*

Charlie: I am concerned! The vacuum monster will eat me! The world is ending! Run away! *flees behind the couch*

Boudicca: I am intensely concerned! The vacuum monster is prowling! Save yourself! *tries to hide*

Cats: What would stop the vacuum monster? Hmm… *Charlie comes out into the middle of the living room and vomits*

Me: Aaaahhhh!

Boudicca: Me too! Blaah! *goes to my office, retches on her bed, then vomits on the floor*

Aaron: Aaaahhhh! Why is everyone barfing?! Can we go a day without somebody barfing please?! *pointing to Charlie* What is this nonsense? You were getting better! *pointing to Boudicca* Did you pig out? Is that why you’re puking? Enough with the floor barf!

Garrus [three hours later]: I think I ate too fast. Blah! *pukes on our bedroom floor*

Me: SERIOUSLY?!

Cats hate change. When they protest about it, things can get messy. Ç’est la vie avec les chats.
